This is one of those news items that falls squarely into the category "We kinda expected that this would happen": Sony Pictures executive Michael Lynton has said that there will be a fourth Spider-Man movie, as well as a fifth, a sixth, and on and on. ""Everybody has every intention of making a fourth, a fifth and a sixth and on and on, Lynton told the BBC. "There will be as many as we can make good stories for."
While this is good news for fans of the webslinger, who are now already starting to speculate on which supervillains we will see in the fourth Spidey-movie (the money is on The Lizard and Carnage at the moment), it also makes you wonder what this will actually mean. Stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst have repeatedly told that they would quit after the third one (though they both seem to be doubting this decision now), and it's also not sure if Raimi will be back for more. I can imagine that the man would be interested in doing something different after three of these humongous movies, and now that critical reception hasn't been so positive for Spidey 3, maybe it's best if he does move on. He should probably stay attached as a producer, to make sure the style of the first three movies is maintained in the next movies, but it seems to be time that a director with a fresh take on the webslinger does his thing.
Do you hear that sound? That's the sound of thousands of Spidey-fans tapping their fingers blue with their speculations on who should be that new director, and the new Spidey, and the new Mary Jane.
