Christina Ricci excited about Speed Racer

"Speed Racer was the most fun ever," enthuses Christina Ricci in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes. The actress plays the female lead in the movie as Trixie, the girlfriend of the movie's hero, Speed Racer. She didn't just like the movie for the action and the thrills, but mainly for her character: "That's another example of a great role model character for girls because she's smart, she's funny and she does all the things the boys do. She kung fu fights, she drives a car, she races and she flies a helicopter. But she has a specific outfit that she wears when she flies the helicopter, and her lipstick always matches something she's wearing. She gets to be everything. She's celebrated as a girl and a woman, but she's also not treated any differently than the male characters are. So, it was so much fun, in that respect. I like being dressed up and I like doing stunts."

Check out the car of Speed Racer's rival

We've all seen the car of Speed Racer a zillion times by now, but car blog Rocket Punch has a pretty good look at one of the cars squaring off against Speed Racer in the movie. It looks a bit like a red Batmobile. Maybe it's one of the axed designs for cars from the Batmovies, and then sprayed red? Eh, maybe not. Click through to see more images.

The official website for Speed Racer has opened. It's a bit bigger than the usual preview site, as it has interviews, the detailed synopsis and some other goodies, so if this movie is high on your most wanted list, you can surely do a lot worse than have a look.

It gives us a few more details on what will be going on with the movie, and how faithful it is going to stay to the original cartoon. And it seems like the Wachowski Brothers, who are directing this movie, are intent on making it stay as true to what fans know of the show as possible.

Last minute addition to Speed Racer cast

Shooting on the movie has started in Germany this week, and here is a last minute addition to the cast: Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights) will star in the movie as the brother of the main character, Speed Racer. This brother is a rather instrumental character in the movie, as it is his death at a race that urges Speed Racer to go on and try to become the best racer in the world himself. Other sites are splattering this announcement with spoilers, and although I'm pretty sure most people interested in this movie know what happens between the two brothers, I'll just keep it at that to not spoil things for the uninitiated (at least, until the first trailer which will no doubt spoil everything anyway).

Watch the cast and crew of Speed Racer discuss their movie

Over a week ago, the Mach 5 from the upcoming Speed Racer movie was revealed at a press conference for the movie in Germany, where it's also being shot. And now, you can watch a little bit of that press conference online, as Reuters have put some clips on their site. Coolest bit is of course the fact that we can now actually see a bit more of the car, which looks very cool. The camera lingers long enough to get a good look at it, and there are even some close-ups, also from the inside of the car. The rest of the clip has producer Joel Silver and stars Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, Matthew Fox and Susan Sarandon doing the usual gushing that always happens at press conferences like this. Still, interesting enough to watch.

Here's your first look at Speed Racer's car!

Speed Racer fans, USA Today has your first look at the Mach 5, the high powered car that will be featured in the movie. And it looks great, a little bit like a white, slicker Batmobile. "My first thought was, 'Yeah, they got the car right,'" star Emile Hirsch told USA Today. "That's one of the best things about the show, so it was always going to be one of the most important parts of the movie." Click through for a bigger look!

Hirsch and Silver talk Speed Racer

Star Emile Hirsch and producer Joel Silver have spoken to USA Today about their upcoming blockbuster Speed Racer, which is set for a release date on May 9, 2008. Hirsch, has been a fan of the television series, and especially the high powered Mach 5 car, ever since he first saw it as a kid. "It was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen," he told USA Today on the phone from the set in Germany, where shooting will start next week. "That's when I started thinking it would be great to be on TV. And have one of those." Silver takes away any fears that the movie will be as dark as the earlier movies the directors, Larry and Andy Wachowski, have made. "Speed Racer is going to be very bright, very family-friendly," Silver says. "And it will have great effects like The Matrix, just with the car." To read more, click the link.

Summer 2008's big hits start shooting next week

Earlier this week I told you that George Lucas had revealed that shooting on the new Indiana Jones movie would start next week. Turns out his movie isn't the only one to begin filming, because there are at least two more big movies that will film their first scenes. Tonight He Comes, the big superhero movie starring Will Smith is going to roll, as well as Speed Racer. Speed Racer has relocated cast and crew to Germany for the shoot, which should lead to a release date on May 9 of next year.
