Movie Poster of the week: The Condemned

Speaking of movies that seem to be nothing more than some good, senseless fun, check out this poster for The Condemned. This is a movie about a group of people on death row, who get one last chance at survival when they are dropped on an uninhabited island with only one mission: Kill the rest and you will live. Added bonus is the fact that the whole world is watching these people killing each other, as it's all part of a new reality show. Survivor eat your heart out. It all sounds kinda Running Man to me, but that movie was a lot of fun, which is just what this movie might turn out to be as well. Click the thumbnail for a bigger look.

Movie Poster of the Week: The Darwin Awards

When I first laid eyes on this poster, I thought to myself: Damn, that's ugly! But my eyes stayed fixated on it, and in the end I had to conclude it may be eugly, but it sure is effective. Because, even though I have heard the name of the movie here and there, I haven't actually heard anything of what it's about. But, the poster has intrigued me enough to go to the IMDB and find out what's up. Which is what you want to achieve with your poster, I'd say.

Poster of the Week: Sunshine

Sunshine is one of this year's big movies I really look forward to. Anything Danny Boyle makes is worth watching, and the story of this movie has me very much intrigued (a group of astronauts travels to the sun, which is dying, to toss a huge bomb into it, so that it will come back to life again, but the trip doesn't quite go as planned). This poster, the UK version, definitely helps in keeping me intrigued. Compare it to the boring and unoriginal American poster and you can almost predict that the reception of the movie will be a lot more enthusiastic in the UK than in the US. I just love the image on the poster, powerful and a bit mysterious, and it evokes the feeling of "I have to see this" that every good poster should bring with it.

Poster of the week: Vacancy

Lots of new posters released this week. As was almost expected, the posters for the big summer blockbusters are pretty uninspired. The first teaser poster for Fantastic Four 2 didn't do anything for me, while the first poster for Die Hard 4 is even more uninspired. "Let's just put a really big picture of Bruce Willis on the poster and people will flock to see it!" Well, they are right of course, but they still could have made a bit more of an effort to turn the poster into something more special. The poster for Vacancy, on the other hand, is really cool. If you have a creepy movie, you want your poster to reflect this as well as possible. You could then of course put an image of some character from the movie looking scared, but that has been done so many times already. Instead, the designers of the Vacancy poster went for this image, and even though I am normally not that much into horror movies, I'm pretty sure I do want to see this movie. And that didn't even have anything to do with the fact that the name of Kate Beckinsale is on the poster. Or at least almost nothing.

Poster of the week: Grindhouse

A new poster was released for Grindhouse this week, which I didn't think was all that great. Sure, the artwork on it's fantastic, but they're trying to cram too much into their poster and so I was a little bit dissapointed. That is, until I saw this huge banner that will also be hanging in movie theaters around the world, and which is pretty fantastic. Yes, there is also a lot of elements on this poster, but thanks to the better placement, as well as the huge size of this thing, it just works better. Shame it's probably bigger than the wall in my living room though...

Poster of the week: Disturbia

Some posters are perfectly able to capture the essence of a movie, and can already interest you before you know anything about the rest of the movie. This poster for thriller Disturbia is a poster like that, as it succesfully makes you wonder what's going on. In Disturbia, a young guy gets placed under house arrest. To spend his time, he uses his binoculars to spy on his neighbours. This starts as a more or less harmless spying on the cute girl next door, but then he sees something that you never hope to see: his neighbour killing a woman in his house. Question is, though, is he really seeing what he thinks he's seeing? And how is he going to convince the police of this? This movie could be a lot of fun.
