Movies Stilled: Penelope again

I'm intrigued by this movie, so here's another movie still from it. Judging from this shot, what can be wrong with Christina Ricci's character? She looks as gorgeous as ever, only, why is that scarf over her face so high? If you've heard about this movie, you know what's up: the scarf is hiding her pig's snout, that she got after being cursed, and which can only be cured by true love. I'm pretty sure more than enough guys out there wouldn't mind kissing her pig's snout a few times, if it would mean true love in the end!

Movies Stilled: Penelope

This is another one of those stills that say more than words can. We have a little girl, who we see from the back, obviously in some sort of hospital room, while a group of doctors is looking at her with brealy disguised disgust. It's a picture that makes you curious: what is wrong with this girl that makes all these grown men reel back in horror? The reason is of course the fact that Christina Ricci's character in this movie has been put under a curse, meaning she will have to go through life with a pig snout, or at least until she finds a man who loves her for what she is. It sounds like your typical fairy tale story, and there's nothing wrong with that, especially not with people like Ricci, Richard E. Grant, Reese Witherspoon and James McAvoy involved.

Movies Stilled: Firehouse Dog

It seems like this is going to be the year of the dog movies (with Underdog and a direct to video Scooby Doo sequel also on the way). Firehouse Dog looks set to be a fun family flick of the type I always used to watch on sunday afternoons, whenever it was raining or too cold to go outside and play football.

Movies Stilled: Black Snake Moan

This is just a great picture. The look on Samuel L. Jackson's face is more intense than we have ever seen him before, and when you wouldn't know anything about what this pic's about, then you would probably now be scratching your head over the question: "What on earth has he got on the other side of that chain?" The answer is of course: a sex obsessed Christina Ricci, which really only makes this picture all the more interesting!

Movies Stilled: Grindhouse

To celebrate the arrival of the new trailer, I thought I'd send you into the weekend with this still from the movie. I know, it's not new, but this section doesn't just focus on new stills anyway. Grindhouse is one of the movies I look forward to most this year, and it's stills like this one that only add to the excitement. Here you have two girls (including Rose McGowan's sexy/murderous heroine) on a cool bike, while in the background you have a bunch of zombies walking away from a house that has seen better days. Now I don't normally dig zombie movies that much, but when Rodriguez and Tarantino are involved, I don't think I will be able to stay away from this movie!

Movies Stilled: The Astronaut Farmer

Looking at this movie still for The Astronaut Farmer (starring Billy Bob Thornton), I get a big urge to watch this movie. Somehow, the still just speaks to me, as it has an almost surreal quality to it. Here you have this older guy, who judging from this still has built a rocket in his barn, saying goodbye to his family. The kids look on with a worried look in their faces, escpecially the son, while the wife seems to be very proud of her hubby. The way the light falls on her hair makes it look like it's in motion, as if the flowing of her hair is somehow propelled by the beaming of her face. And the main character himself seems to be in total control of his emotions, his face giving off a "You don't have to worry about a thing"-vibe that fits him splendidly. Yeah, I really like this still a lot, and it's stills like this that make people look forward to seeing new movies.

Movies Stilled: Underdog

The movie stills for Underdog that have been released so far are not what you would call your regular movie stills, as they mostly seem to be shots of the titular Underdog in all sorts of poses that seem to be inspired by other superhero movies, with the pictures being heavily touched up to add to the style of the pics. Still, I will say that I like the style they bring out, and although I had no interest in this movie before seeing the pics, I will say that I'm mildly interested now. Which is also thanks to the first teaser trailer for the movie, by the way, which looks pretty impressive cgi-wise.

Movies Stilled: Zodiac

Zodiac is the new movie from Seven/Fight Club mastermind David Fincher, and website First Showing has a big collection of new stills. I particularly liked this one, showing Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role as the cop trying to find the notorious Zodiac killer, a real life killer who was never caught (wait, is that a plot spoiler?), but who inspired several people to track him down ferociously. Judging from all these stills, the movie will have the typical Fincher-mood, which can really only be a good thing.

Movies Stilled: Trick 'r Treat

It's difficult to nowadays make a horror movie that stands out. I mean, honestly, I have seen enough movie posters with severed heads, scary creatures and beautiful women looking scared to last me a lifetime. So how do you make sure that your new horror movie will stand out anyway? Well, this first still from Trick 'r Treat, the new movie from Superman Returns writer Michael Dougherty, is a good start. This picture, of a school bus filled with trick or treaters, is innocent enough, but in a way also kind of creepy. And, like a good movie still, it makes you wonder: is one of these kids a killer? Are they all? Are they going to get hurt themselves? Why isn't any of these kids sitting next to each other? Are they all scared of the other kids? A bit of patience though, we will have to wait until October 5th (USA) or even longer (the rest of the world) to find out the answer to this question...

Movies Stilled: The Messengers

Looking at this image, you know something is wrong. Penelope Ann Miller knows it. That little kid on her arm knows it. And even though the sun is shining through the windows, making sure that both characters aren't in the dark, you still get a creepy feeling when you look at this image. And when you are making a thriller about children being able to see paranormal things, while adults cannot, that is just the feeling you want to convey.
