Movies Stilled: Live Free or Die Hard

Yes, this is how we expect to see our hero John McClane. Grizzled expression: check! Bloody bandages: check! Weapon in hand: check! White vest: ch... Hey! Where is John McClane's iconic vest? Well, as a matter of fact you can see it underneath his green other shirt, but so far we haven't seen any pics from the movie yet where the green thing is gone, and McClane wears his vest. Is it not going to happen at all? That's like Superman without his red tights! I say, this is worse than Bruce hardly cursing in the movie.

Movies Stilled: Stardust

Fans of bg budget fantasy movies have much to look forward to this year. There's The Golden Compass coming at the end of 2007, and before that they can already enjoy Stardust, a movie based on a book by Neil Gaimann. It's a movie I look forward to very much, if only for the opportunity to see Robert DeNiro as a pirate! It's a role that seems quite unlike anything he has done before, and it was good to see him have fun in the trailer, like he is also doing in this new still that was released a few days ago.

Movies Stilled: Grindhouse

I don't think we will see Bruce Willis a lot more bad-ass than this in any movie of his that's released this year (Yes, I am referring to Die Hard 4). I will admit that the gun he is carrying looks a bit cheap, like it's out of some zombie movie (oh, wait, it is), but like the rest of Grindhouse, I think Willis will kick some major rear-end when Grindhouse is released.

Movies Stilled: Hot Fuzz

One of the most highly anticipated movies of the year must be the new comedy by the team behind Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz. It's a police spoof that is getting great reviews all over the place, and which is already a big success in England. At the moment it's IMDB score is 8.1 from about 8.000 votes, meaning good things are ahead for people in search of a good comedy.

Movies Stilled: Air Guitar Nation

In case you are wondering what is missing from this picture: the guitar is supposed to not be there. This still is from upcoming documentary Air Guitar Nation, about the phenomenon of very popular air guitar championships that are being held all over the world. There are many air guitarists who travel the world for these championships, and who themselves have fanclubs. This all culminates in the air guitar world championship that was held in Finland last year. It's not a spoof documentary, these are all real people, which makes this movie even more fun to watch.

Movies Stilled: Pathfinder

There just aren't enough of these no-nonsense action flicks like Pathfinder anymore nowadays. I'm pretty sure the movie is not going to set the movie world alight, and I'm not even sure it's going to do well at the box office, but back in the days when I spent all my free time in the cinema I would have been in a movie seat opposite a screen playing this movie on opening day. Nowadays, when I don't have that much time to go to the cinema anymore, I think this is going to be one of those pics that I will end up seeing on DVD. And I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy this tale of Indians versus invading Vikings a lot.

Movies Stilled: Black Book (Zwartboek)

It's not often that a Dutch movie gets such a wide release worldwide, so when it does happen, I have to help it out a little bit! It's weeks before the release of Paul Verhoeven's Black Book in the United States and Sony Pictures Classics has released almost a dozen of stills for the movie. This is probably the one that speaks the most, showing the terror of the two characters as they realise they are in the midst of a bombing by German planes. In this picture on the left you see Holland's best actress at the moment, Carice van Houten, who first hit it big in Holland with her lead role in the wonderful Dutch family movie Minoes, and who has since then steadily built up an impressive filmography, which culminates now with her lead role in Black Book. I'm not saying it's her best role, since she has done so much more than was great, but it's the role that will get her noticed outside of her home country.

Movies Stilled: Spider-Man 3

Now that's handy. Say that you have been out on the town with your lady, and you just cannot wait to get home before the smooching starts, then it's very handy to have Spidey's powers and be able to just build yourself a nice, comfortable net right then and there. This image is a good way for Sony to show that there won't just be fighting in Spider-Man 3, what with that huge roster of supervillains lining up for the movie, but that there is also some time left for light hearted, even romantic moments. Which is really what set the previous two Spider-Man movies apart from many of the other superhero flicks.

Movies Stilled: The Last Mimzy

This is like a nightmare image for any kid: to look under the bed, the place where all the monsters are, ready to drag you into their world and do unspeakable things to you. Okay, maybe I have read a little too much Calvin and Hobbes, but this is still an image that raises questions: Why are these kids looking under their bed? What is hiding there? Don't they ever clean up their room? The Last Mimzy is a movie that could be a lot of fun, and brings back some memories of those fun 80's family flicks featured in today's top ten.

Movies Stilled: Lost in Translation

In case you were wondering: If I would ever be interviewed for "I Love This Movie", it would be about Lost in Translation. Everything about that movie just clicks for me. The chemistry between the leads, the mood, the music... Yeah I know there is no amazingly intricate story behind this movie, but when something is this good, it just doesn't matter. I can watch this movie over and over again, loving every minute of it every single time. This shot is from one of my favorite moments in the movie, when Bob and Charlotte have had a wild night out and find themselves in the heart of Tokyo, with the surreal happening of a huge billboard with Bob on it just having driven by.
