I'm glad that I gave myself until this Sunday to make any changes I wanted to this list of ten challenges. Yesterday, while playing Project Gotham Racing 4, I wondered how wise it was for me to enter a challenge where I would have to unlock 1000 achievements in one years time. Unlocking 1000 achievements on the Xbox 360 takes A LOT of time, and even though I was enthusiastic about the challenge, I just don't think I have the time to play that much. Besides which, if I just try to unlock challenges, then the fun of actually playing the games and enjoying them will be greatly reduced. Besides which, I'd have to start all over on some games that I've progressed pretty far in already.
So, exit challenge 6!
Still, as a replacement challenge, I do want to stay in the realm of videogames. And a great new challenge popped into my mind almost instantly after I decided to change things around. I want to make a website about videogames that is as 'successful' as the Dutch language gamesite I had quite a few years ago. Let me give you a little bit of background on this.
Back in the days, around the time the first Playstation was stilling selling like hotcakes, the Nintendo 64 occasionally surprised us with some great games, and the Dreamcast was almost ready to be launched, I was one of the creators of GameNed, one of the first real gamesites in the Netherlands. My co-creators and I decided to do things a bit differently to how most other sites were handling things. We wrote a lot of original articles and columns, while most sites just posted reviews and news, and besides that we also introduced a lifestyle element to the site. After a slow start, the site gained in popularity and quickly became one of the bigger gamesites in The Netherlands, with at it's highpoint about 1200 unique visitors a day. This may not seem like much, and most gamesites nowadays (even over here) laugh at figures like that, but we were pretty happy with the amount of visitors we got.
Eventually, the site became a victim of it's own success, with many money-hungry business types promising us mountains of money, of which we didn't see anything, after which the fun of making the site dissapeared and the site sadly faded away. I kept telling people that one day I would make a new gamesite, or even restart GameNed, but it never happened and I lost most of my interest in gaming.
Lately though, gaming has regained it's position as being one of my biggest hobbies, and the idea of making a new gamesite has started popping into my mind more and more frequently. So, a new challenge 6 has been born: To make a website about videogames that attracts at least 1200 unique visitors a day.
Honestly, I have no idea yet about what to do with the site, but I'm guessing it will have something to do with the Xbox 360, which is my main system of choice at the moment. I'll keep you posted!
