Ah, Oscar predictions. Always fun to do, always an embarrassment because I'm absolutely horrible at them. If you're an Oscar nominee and you see your name as one of my picks, then leave your tuxedo in the cupboard and stay at home, because your chance to win has just gotten a whole lot smaller. Still, I'll give it another shot, sticking to the more important categories that I can actually make a real decision about without just closing my eyes and picking one from the list by pointing at it. Here we go!
Best Picture: The Departed
There's some great movies nominated this year, but the movie that keeps popping up in all the lists is this one. I mean, they are not going to let Clint Eastwood beat Martin Scorceses again, will they? I'd say Little Miss Sunshine is an outsider, though maybe a bit too quirky for the Academy.
Best Actor: Forest Whitaker
Well, everybody is naming this guy for the victory, and even though I haven't seen the film yet, it's the typical role that does well with Oscar voters. It would be fun to see Ryan Gosling win, but you have to admit Whitaker is one hell of an actor.
Best Actress: Helen Mirren
Can you hear that incessant buzzing in your ear, that just won't die down? That's the buzz for Helen Mirren to win this Oscar, hands down.
Best Supporting Actor: Mark Wahlberg
More buzzing, this time for Mark Wahlberg. I never knew this was ever going to happen when I bought his album for a friend all those years ago...
Best Supporting Actress: Abigail Breslin
Call it a long shot, but I'm saying Abigail Breslin is going to win this one. All these actresses are great, but the academy might be inclined to give the Oscar to this young actress because of her age.
Best Director: Martin Scorcese
Come on, give it to Scorcese already! Though I wouldn't rule out Paul Greengrass either...
Best Screenplay: Little Miss Sunshine
If Little Miss Sunshine doesn't win anything else, then this is the category where it will score.
Best Adapted Screenplay: Borat
Would it be too weird if I say Borat here?
Best Animated Movie: Cars
Cars is going to win this, even though Monster House was in my opinion a lot more fun to watch.
Best Documentary: An Inconvenient Truth
This is maybe the easiest one to guess: Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth of course (directed by the way by Davis Guggenheim).
