Podcasting? RSS? What’s all this?
For those of you who haven’t heard about podcasting yet: this is a new phenomenon that can be described as audio-blogging. A podcast is basically a radio-like program in mp3 format, made on many different subjects, by people all over the world.
You can download podcasts one-by-one from the websites they originate from, or better yet: download every new episode automatically to your iPod or any other mp3 player.
How do I get ‘em?
To download new podcast automatically you need a podcasting client which you can download in the downloads section of www.ipodder.org. Well known clients are iPodder and Doppler (for Windows) and iPodderX (for Mac OS).
Downloadable podcasts are read from RSS of XML links you find on many websites these days. They are often found by looking for the orange XML icon.
Popular podcasts include Adam Curry’s Daily Source Code, The Dawn & Drew Show and Reel Reviews. A categorized directory of podcasts is found here.
After installing a podcasting client, you paste the URL (the XML/RSS link) of the podcast you like as a new feed in your client.
This link is used only in RSS newsreaders, or indeed podcasting programs. If you open the same link in your browser it often looks like a collection of colorful XML code.
For the Scribble King podcast (as well as general content updates) you can use the following RSS feed:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/ScribbleKing
From this moment on your podcasting client will periodically check if there are any new podcasts available and download them to your hard drive.
Syncing with your mp3 player
If you’re using an iPod it’s very easy to synchronize the podcasts on your hard drive using the iTunes mediaplayer.
If you have any other mp3 player and Windows, you can use Windows Media Player 10. An excellent how-to on synchronizing files this was is found here.
After this you’re all set. Just plug in your mp3 player, and receive all your favourite podcasts the moment they’ve been downloaded. Have fun!
Many thanks to Onno for writing this down for me!
