Now that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Superman Returns have the box office in a firm grip, and movies like Mission Impossible 3, The Da Vinci Code and X-Men: The Last Stand are nothing but a memory, you might think that the fireworks are over for this year. Still, there are plenty of other big movies coming out in the second half of 2006. If you are looking for a heavy dose of popcorn entertainment, you don't have to luck further than these ten blockbusters.
10 Pathfinder (September 8)
After Pirates of the Caribbean made it cool again to watch Pirate-movies, get ready for the resurgence of another genre: the Viking movie (come to think of it, have those ever been popular at all?). In Pathfinder, a young Viking boy is left behind when his clansmen fight a Native American tribe. He is raised by them and when one day the Vikings come back, fights against them with his new family and friends. Expect plenty of blood and gore and slo-mo shots of heads being cut off.
9 Miami Vice (July 28)
Michael Mann brings his old TV-series Miami Vice back to life, and does so in spectacular fashion. What we have seen of it so far is very much in the style of Collateral, meaning lots of style and atmosphere. Let's just hope they will use that old theme song a lot!
8 The Black Dahlia (September 15)
Brian DePalma goes back to what he does best, dark thrillers. In this one, two cops go on the hunt for the killer of a young actress. This search uncovers a conspiracy, which will probably lead to plenty of doublecrossing. The movie is based on a book by James Ellroy, and stars Josh Hartnett, Scarlett Johansson and Aaron Eckhart.
7 The Guardian (September 22)
It's good to see Kevin Costner back where he belongs, in a big popcorn flick. He's a veteran rescue swimmer with some tragic happenings in his past, who is recruited to train a new generation of rescue swimmers. One of these guys is a talented hotshot (Ashton Kutcher), who no doubt reminds Costner's character of his young self. This movie screams 80's throwback, and that could be a good thing.
6 The Prestige (October 27)
There's two stage magician pictures coming out this year (the other one being The Illusionist), and this is the more (wait for it) prestigious one. It stars Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman and Scarlett Johansson, is directed by Christopher Nolan and sees Michael Caine in a supporting role. Bale and Jackman are battling it out for the same woman, using all sorts of long forgotten magic that triggers some particularly nasty events.
5 Rocky Balboa (December 22)
Admittedly, the last few Rocky pictures were pretty bad and left audiences mostly cold. This new one looks like it could rekindle the old flame, however, as Sly's most endurable character recognizes the fact that he is getting old, but still wants to have one shot at showing the world what he can do. Nostalgia will probably propel this picture to great heights at the box office.
4 A Night at the Museum (December 22)
High concept movies should be a part of any Christmas movie season, and this one is a prime example. Ben Stiller stars as a night watchman in a museum where all the exhibits come to life at night. It has an endless list of fun actors in supporting roles (Dick van Dyke and Robin Williams being two of those) and has a heavy Jumanji vibe surrounding it. Could be the hit of the end of the year box office.
3 Eragon (December 15)
You don't have to worry about missing your fantasy fix this year, now that there are no Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter or Chronicles of Narnia movies coming out around Christmas. Eragon is based on an extremely popular series of books involving dragons, adventure and fights involving massive armies hacking into each other. Hmm, parts of this sound familiar, or is that just me?
2 Casino Royale (November 17)
Bond is back, and I think the new direction for the series will make it all seem fresh again. Respect for Pierce Brosnan and what he has done for the character, but it looks like Daniel Craig will be leaner, meaner and possibly even more suave than his predecessor. Let's just hope that the whole back to the roots idea does not ruin all the elements that made this series of films so popular in the first place.
1 The Fountain (October 13)
It's not the movie with the biggest budget of this top ten, in fact probably the movie with the lowest budget. But this new project by Darren Aranofsky has me more excited than any other movie coming out this year. We see Hugh Jackman as a man trying to find a cure for the illness that threatens his wife's life (the wife being played by Rachel Weisz). This involves a mysterious fountain, whose water should be able to cure her again. Or, as IMDB says: Spanning over one thousand years, and three parallel stories, The Fountain is a story of love, death, spirituality, and the fragility of our existence in this world. How can you not love a movie like that?
