Yep, there's a new Bond-girl in town, and the lucky girl to be signed for the role is Eva Green. Although Green has had roles in some high profile movies, her own profile is still relatively below the radar. She is not the type of actress that generates millions of hits on the Internet (although that might very well change after today), and it seems that Casino Royale, the new Bond movie, is the first flick to really propel the young actress into the spotlights.
I can remember the first time I saw Eva Green in a movie quite well. We had rented Bernardo Bertolucci's movie The Dreamers, and for two hours, Green was walking around more outside her clothes than inside them. Of course this is not very unusual for a European movie, but still the many sex scenes were pretty explicit and it was quite a way for Green to make her first big splash upon the movie screen. ""I am a very shy person in life, very reserved, but you know, it's Bertolucci," Eva remarked when being interviewed about the movie. "I've seen Last Tango and it's not pornographic, it's not vulgar, it's not sick, so I trusted him. He's a master of love and eroticism, but it's good because I stopped being self-conscious. I felt like I was on drugs or anaesthetised because you have to be. You have to let yourself slip away and forget everything, forget the sound guy and all that."
The Dreamers, a movie from 2003, was only Green's very first acting gig, and so far only two more have followed. The French actress was next seen in the French movie Arsene Lupin, which was followed by the worldwide blockbuster (or at least outside of America) Kingdom of Heaven. In this, Eva played Sibylla, sister of Baldwin, the king of Jerusalem. Later on in the movie her character would fall in love with Orlando Bloom's crusader Balian, and this lead to more sex scenes and more on screen nudity for Green. Most of these scenes were cut out of the movie for the theatrical release, however, much to the chagrin of Green, who thought these scenes integral to the movie.
And now there's the new Bond movie. And while Green may not have the obvious sex appeal of some of the previous Bond-girls, she does bring a depth in acting that we have not seen much before in this role. This coïncides very nicely with the intentions of the people behind Casino Royale to give Bond a new, fresh start. Green could give the role of Vesper Lynd a new edge, a Bond girl that is maybe not just a goody goody. Or, as Green said herself in another interview: ""At drama school I always picked the really evil roles. It's a great way to deal with your everyday emotions." As for her looks, fans of the Bond movies don't really have to worry there either. Fansites have already been popping up here and there, and with the added exposure of being Bond Girl #21, Green could soon find herself in the company of women like Rachel McAdams, Scarlett Johansson and Angelina Jolie. Enough reasons to look forward to the new Bond movie and to see if Daniel Craig will be able to handle his leading lady...
