Best Animated Movie of 2006: Monster House

It would seem that 2006 has been a good year for animation. It looked like there was a new animated movie playing in our local cinema all the time, and many of the movies released throughout the year did great business. But when you look at the quality of the movies, 2006 has not been as stellar as some of the previous years. Pixar's movie was not as grand as expected, Disney released a very average third party movie and the other studios seemed to be stuck in 'cute animal'-territory. There was one exception however, a fun picture called Monster House, which was both a throwback to the great teen-movies of the eighties, and a model for other studios to follow.

The year's Top 10 most successful animated movies

2006 has been a good year for animation. While not all animated movies released raked in enough money to make back their budgets, some of the animated features did very good business. Now that the year is over, we can look at the list of the ten most successful animated movies of the year. The biggest surprise? Ice Age 2 being the most popular animated movie of the year, mainly thanks to an enormous international (non American) gross, beating out Pixar's Cars by almost 200 million dollars. Another surprise is the 10th position for Curious George, the only traditionally animted movie of the list, showing Disney that going back to 2D might not be such a bad idea after all. I was hoping for Monster House to end up higher, since I thought that was the most amusing animated movie released this year, but it has to settle for sixth place, in between Open Season and Flushed Away.

Monster House is an animated movie coming out later this month, and to be honest, the people behind the movie haven't really spoiled us with information about their movie. Yeah, sure, there are two great trailers and there's a website, but it took them long enough to finally send out a batch of pics for the movie. Crucial in the battle for the money of people interested in animated movies, is to make sure your movie has a cool poster. And they don't get much cooler than this new poster for Monster House. It's a bit scary, a bit inviting and gives you a clear picture of what you can (probably) expect from this movie. July 21 cannot come soon enough!

"Oooh, so it's a Girl House?"

The new trailer for Monster House has been online for a week or so, but I haven't been able to catch it before now. Some of the stuff in the trailer we already saw in the teaser, but there is plenty of new stuff to whet your appetite. The premise to Monster House is a simple one. Three kids find out that the house across the street is in reality a monster. They try to warn the adults, but who will believe a crazy story like this? People dissapear, the kids set out on a rescue mission, and both shocks and laughs follow in rapid succession. Don;t worry about this being too scary though, since the movie is a cgi animated production by Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg, and looks like it will be a total blast. The animation is lively, the trailer is literally packed with jokes and the premise is intriguing enough to make me want to put this movie high on my must see list. This could be the coolest animated movie of the summer.

Monster House is the big Dreamworks animated movie for next summer. It's all about a group of kids who become intrigued by the house on the other side of the street. This is not just any house, mind, it's a living, breathing, scary monster! Of course, nobody believes the kids, and they will have to go and examine things themselves, which leads to many wild adventures. The teaser trailer has premiered online over at Quicktime, and it looks pretty good. It seems to me like this is a less merchandise friendly Dreamworks movie (although a Monster House Happy Meal is not out of the question), and maybe that's a good thing.
