Shooting on the second Narnia movie, Prince Caspian, is well underway in New Zealand as we speak, but Disney and Walden Media have decided to announce the director for the third movie already anyway. And, as with the new Bond-director, the Narnia team has also decided on choosing a director who hasn't really got a lot of experience with the genre. Apted is the man who directed James Bond: The World is Not Enough, Gorilla's in the Mist and Amazing Grace, and to him, directing The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (could they make that title any longer?) is an interesting new challenge. Or, to let the man speak for himself: ""I'm thrilled to be asked to make the film. It's something new and a great challenge," he told Coming Soon. Which isn't a very unexpected thing for him to say, as he is not going to say that "it's just a job that will make me a lot of money".
Still, it will be interesting to see how Apted will handle the franchise. Andrew Adamson, director of the first two movies, is a director with more of a history in the genre, and as we could see with the Harry Potter movies, different directors do bring a little bit of their own unique style to projects like this. The third Potter, directed by Alfonso Cuaron, was completely different from the earlier two directed by Chris Columbus, and it did the franchise a lot of good, in my opinion. Still, we will have to wait a little bit before we can see this third Narnia movie anyway, as shooting is only going to start in January, for a release on May 1st, 2009. The second Narnia movie, Prince Caspian, will be released almost a year earlier, on May 16th 2008.
