Two directors being considered for Wolverine

060601 As it looks right now, two directors are up for the directing chair on the new Wolverine movie. The two men in question are Len Wiseman (Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard) and DJ Caruso (Disturbia), with Wiseman apparently being the most logical choice, since Caruso is also being wooed by Dreamworks for another project. Wiseman has of course proven he can work with material like this, after turning both Underworld movies into successes. And maybe he can squeeze in a small part for his missus, Kate Beckinsale?

Small Wolverine and Magneto update

It's so small, you almost cannot call it an update (but update-ette would sound silly): 20th Century Fox studio head Tom Rothmann has given XFM News a quote on the Wolverine and Magneto movies. ""It’s really soon to tell. The most important thing is to get the movies right!", Rothmann said. "If I had to guess, I’d say Wolvie in ‘08 and Mag in ‘09, but it could change." There you go then, nothing much, but at least some reassurance that work is indeed being done.

Magneto will be an origin story

Judging from the recent supermovie poll on this site, you guys and gals aren't that excited yet about the Magneto movie. Still, maybe that will change when you read what producer Avi Arad had to say about the upcoming X-Men spinoff. “Think of meeting him in the first X-Men movie as a young boy in a concentration camp. What happens to his life after the war? If his powers are real or not and the whole journey of his survival as a young man.” David Goyer is attached to both write the movie and direct it, for release somewhere in 2009. This doesn't sound like it will be your average popcorn superhero flick, and with Goyer attached we might be in for something special.

Wolverine movie coming in 2007

At the Cine Expo in Amsterdam, where European movie distributors and cinema owners gather every year, Fox announced that the Wolverine movie will already be coming to us in 2007. To add more weight to this promise, Fox then went on to show a tape of Hugh Jackman himself making the same promise to everybody that was gathered at the Expo. Looks like next year will be even more superhero heavy than this year already was!

Info on Wolverine movie

One of the writers of the upcoming Wolverine movie, Simon Kinberg, has spoken to IF Magazine about the movie, and what we can expect from it. As is common with movies that are still being written and are effectively in the pre-production phase, Kinberg didn't say much, but did drop some bits of info that will probably interest you. "Sabretooth will be in there," Kinberg said for instance. "I think his relationship with Wolverine is under explored. I like X1 a great deal, I thought the tone was fantastic and thought the X-Men were great, but I was a little underwhelmed by the Brotherhood in that movie." He also mentions in the interview that there will probably be more X-Men making an appearance in Wolverine, but, as was to expected, stops at the namedropping. To read the interview, click here.

Third X-Men spin-off in the making?

We have all heard about the two X-Men spin-off movies that are on the way, featuring Magneto and Wolverine, but according to USA Today there is a third one coming up. According to the newspaper, Fox is developing a movie together with Three Kings director David O. Russell, focussing on X-Men (or woman, actually) Emma Frost, a character not featured in the previous three movies. Not much more word on that project yet, but it sure is an interesting proposition.

Hmm... No X4 after all?

According to Marvel Studios boss Avi Arad, you shouldn't count too hard on an X-Men 4. Part 3 is still supposed to be the end of the line for the franchise, which will spin off into a young Magneto movie and a Wolverine movie. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if movie studio Fox has other thoughts about this, especially since the movie has now already made more than 200 million dollars worldwide, thus recouping it's costs.

Mutants Win: X-Men 3 rules box office

Although the official figures for the weekend are not released yet, it seems like X-Men 3 is an international blockbuster. Yeah, I know, I could have probably told you that already before the weekend started, but the movie is so successful that it even broke some records. It's friday American total of 44.5 million dollars makes it the largest American friday opening ever, and it seems like the movie is now on it's way to an opening weekend in the US of about 115 million dollars. And you still believe there won't be a fourth X-Men movie?

Some more cool X-Men posters

The movie is out, and it's a gigantic success all over the world. If you haven't seen it yet, then consider this small gallery of international posters for the movie as another reason for you to join the millions of people who have already seen it. Of course, if you have already seen it, then consider this link as a nice reminder of what a great movie it is!

Review: X-Men 3: The Last Stand

Okay, I'll admit, like many other movie fans I was a bit worried when it was announced that Brett Ratner was going to take over the X-Men franchise. It's not that I don't value the guy as a director, I really enjoy the Rush Hour movies, but I wasn't sure if he had it in him to bring that combination of action and emotion that Bryan Singer was so successful in bringing to the screen in the previous two movies. After seeing X-Men 3 I am still not sure about this, but I'm also not worried anymore. Because even though the talky moments don't pack the emotional punch they should, the action scenes are so fantastically over the top that the adrenaline will have you reeling for hours after you have left the cinema.
