Garden State
Friday 17 December 2004 It's funny that in two of the best movies of the year, actually very little happens. Lost in Translation was a magnificent portrayal of a few days in the life of two tourists in Japan, more or less lost in a whirlwind of jetlag, sleep deprevation, a completely unintelligeble language and incomprehensible local habits, but the two leads hardly got out of their hotel. It struck such a major chord though, because the leading actors were fantastic and watching the movie felt like sitting in a hot, soothing bath. In Garden State (* * * * ½) not much more happens, but it is almost equally wonderful to watch. This is all the more amazing since the movie is directed by newcomer Zach Braff, a young actor best known for his leading role in hit sitcom Scrubs. If you would have told anybody that his first movie as director/writer/lead would be this good, nobody would have believed you. With just a single movie, Braff has established himself as a major talent.
In Garden State, Braff plays Andrew Largeman, a budding actor who gets recognized in the streets for playing a mentally handicapped football player in a popular TV-movie. However, after that the roles have dried up for him and he makes a living working in a Vietnamese restaurant. His dead-end life gets shaken up when he gets a phonecall from his father: His mother has died and Andrew has to come home for the funeral. This is the first time in many years that Andrew goes back home to the small town where he was born, and all his old friends are very surprised to see him. He gets invited to parties, hangs out with his buddies, tries to avoid having to talk to his father and that's about all that happens. At least, until he meets Sam (Nathalie Portman), a pretty girl that lives in his neighbourhood, who has a bit of a screw loose but who touches something in Andrew. This is an unknown feeling for Andrew, who has been on anti-depression medication for all of his life and who has not felt anything in ages. He starts to hang out more with Sam and begins to come in touch with his own feelings.
I told you, Garden State is not the most exciting movie plotwise. Zach cruises through his old hometown in a two-seater motorcycle, talks a lot with his friends and gets high every now and then. Still, I could not take my eyes off the screen. It's pure movie magic happening here, because even the most mundane things that Andrew does is interesting to watch. This is especially the case after Andrew meets Sam for the first time. Their meeting, in the waiting room of a hospital, is destined to become a classic. It's absurd, it's clumsy, but it emits the feeling that there might be some real love growing here. When Sam takes Andrew to her home after the meeting, things get even more surreal. This is also part of the charm of this movie. It might seem like Andrew is leading a normal life, but he is surrounded by people and places that would not be out of place in a Coen Brother's movie. Braff succeeds however in keeping the movie very grounded, so that you really care about what happens to Andrew, Sam and the main supporting characters. These characters act a lot more real than you see in many a 'serious' movie.
Although Scrubbs is a pretty funny comedy series, and Braff does a fine job playing the lead role in it, I could never have expected him to shine this much in his movie debut. It's amazing what he does behind the camera, but he is no slough in front of it either. He might not look like your typical romantic lead, but in the end you are rooting for him to get together with Sam. You want him to get out of his medicine enduced depression and start to live again. That Sam is able to get this much feelings out of Andrew, is very understandable. Nathalie Portman gives one of the best roles of her life as Sam, playing a vibrant, kooky but very lovable character. I hope she will take more of these roles, since they suit her better than her role in the new Star Wars movies. But it's not just the main characters that shine. Actors like Ian Holm and Peter Sarsgaard give great performances too, adding more flavor to what is already a wonderful experience.
How can such a small, uneventful movie be this good? It's all thanks to Braff, who has created a brilliant little movie. From the quirky script, to the superb acting, to the memorable music, everything in this movie seems completely right. I cannot wait to see what Braff will do with his next prodution!
