The new movie starring Carice van Houten, Alles is Liefde (Everything is Love) is a major hit in The Netherlands. In it's first weekend, the movie attracted more than 100.000 visitors, which is a very high attendance figure for an opening weekend, especially for a Dutch movie not based on any known property. Mostly the 100.000 plus openings are reserved for big Hollywood blockbusters, but this Dutch romantic movie, loosely inspired by Love Actually, could become the biggest non-US hit of the year. In it, Carice plays a shy woman working at a department store, who meets a prince ready to sweep her off her feet. It's one of the many intertwined storylines in this movie, which has been getting only good reviews in the Dutch press (again, something that doesn't happen that often). Especially Carice's performance was lauded, which makes it a shame that we will probably not see her in Dutch movies for some time. On the other hand, she will be starring in so many big Hollywood movies in the future that we don't have to worry about not seeing her in the cinema here anymore in the near future! No word yet on whether people outside the Netherlands and Belgium will be able to see Alles is Liefde anytime soon, since the movie is filled with jokes and situations only Dutch and Belgian audiences would probably understand, but with Carice's stature rising so quickly, you never know.
Dutch actress Carice van Houten, who we last saw stealing Paul Verhoeven's Black Book, has signed on to play the biggest role of her career, opposite Tom Cruise in Bryan Singer's Valkyrie. The movie tells the story of a group of German generals who devise a plot to kill Hitler, and also stars Kenneth Branagh, Patrick Wilson, Stephen Fry and Tom Wilkinson. This is already the third English language picture Van Houten has signed on for, after two smaller movies Smoke and Ochre and Dorothy Mills. Shooting on Valkyrie will start in July, in Berlin.
