When you look at what people don't like about animated movies, the first thing that springs to mind is the fact that they all seem to be about cute animals. And even though this isn't entirely true (sometimes they're about talking cars!), they do have a point. The problem, if you can really call it that, is the fact that in essence, the genre is primarily intended for kids. And kids love animated animals. Heck, plenty of adults do! And animated critters have massive merchandising potential.
Still, if you look at one of the freshest animated movies of the year, Monster House, then you can see
a distinct lack of funny, yapping critters. It didnt do as well as Happy Feet or Over the Hedge, but it did well enough for creators of animated movies to realize that there are options beyond hyperactive squirrels and domesticated bears.
Even though i will admit that the merchandising potential of houses that eat people is not so big, i do hope we will see more critterless animation in the near future.
